For December Plein Air Paint-out the MAA artists are invited to paint the historic Farm Women’s Market in Bethesda.
(Registration begins on December 1, 2022. Number of participants limited to 12.)
Founded in 1932, the Montgomery Farm Women’s Cooperative Market is the oldest continuously operated farm market in Montgomery County.
Surrounded by modern office buildings on the busy Wisconsin Avenue, this old Market has been a hub of Bethesda life. It endures as both a reminder of Bethesda’s agricultural past and as a pioneering example of women’s entrepreneurship. As the Great Depression, by 1932, had caused economic conditions to deteriorate rapidly, a group of 19 enterprising farmers’ wives from Bethesda, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Monrovia, Germantown, Spencerville and other farming communities gathered to find a creative and sustainable way to augment their family incomes. Their goal was to generate needed income by selling high quality produce, dairy and meat products, baked goods and crafts to residents of DC and its expanding suburbs at a weekly self-managed market. Ninety years later, their initiative is continuing to serve the community three days a week!
What to expect: You can paint the old Market or explore other interesting buildings along the Wisconsin Avenue and Bethesda Row. Dress up warm and in layers. Carry hand warmers and gloves if weather is too cold for your liking. Try not to setup at crossroads as the wind-chill factor might make your painting experience more challenging. There are several restaurants along the Avenue if you wish for a hot drink or lunch. The Farm Market often has Food Trucks.
