We are thrilled to announce our first show at the beautiful and historic Kentlands Mansion. This exceptional venue offers an incredible opportunity for MAA artists to showcase their work in one of the more important galleries in the area.

This is a juried exhibition of 50 artworks. Artwork at Kentlands Mansion will be displayed throughout both the first and second floors of the mansion, along with adjoining rooms that create the "gallery" experience.

Show Theme -- A Closer Look

What happens when you slow down and really look?

A Closer Look invites artists to explore observation, attention, and discovery—work that reveals something more the longer we spend with it.

This may mean focusing on quiet details, unexpected perspectives, or the layered beauty of everyday subjects—the expression on a face, the texture of weathered surfaces, shifting light across a landscape, or small moments often overlooked in daily life.

It may also mean looking beyond first impressions—finding meaning, emotion, or connection that becomes clearer through careful attention.

Artists are encouraged to create work that draws the viewer in and rewards a second glance—art that invites pause, curiosity, and deeper engagement.

Sometimes the most powerful subjects are not the grandest ones, but the ones we almost missed.

Show Juror and Considerations

We are excited to welcome Jennifer Kahn Barlow as juror for A Closer Look.

Jennifer is an award-winning oil painter whose celebrated work often explores the beauty, color, and emotion found in everyday confections. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout the Mid-Atlantic and featured in Washingtonian and Professional Artist, with work held in both public and private collections.

As juror, Jennifer will evaluate artwork based on technical merit, originality, composition, presentation, emotional impact, and how thoughtfully each piece engages with the theme A Closer Look.

Eligibility Requirements

Membership: All members are warmly invited to register their artwork for consideration. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this exciting milestone for MAA!

If you are not a member and wish to participate in the show, please sign up for membership by clicking JOIN MAA.

Media: Original 2D artwork: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, encaustic, drawing/ink mediums, hand-pulled prints, fused glass, textile-fiber arts and digital painting (Digital Painting Requirements for MAA Shows) and Photography. All work must be consistent with the subject requirements and theme.

Number of Artworks Allowed: MAA members are invited to submit one artwork with an optional second for consideration in this show.

Artwork Size: All artwork must be less than sixty (60) inches in any dimension and weigh less than fifty (50) pounds.

Framing & Wiring Requirements: All artwork must conform to the MAA and the City of Gaithersburg framing and hanging requirements. See framing guidance FRAMING GUIDANCE; click additional link on the framing guidance page for Gallery wrapped work.

Artists Label: Artists must label the back of their artwork with the artist's name and the title of the artwork.

Featured artwork: Holly Buehler's Bouquet, whose blooms appear to pour outward from the center of the composition, releasing color, light, and energy into the surrounding space—a fitting expression of this year's theme, Pour.

Theme for Submissions: POUR

A single word with many possibilities, Pour invites artists to explore ideas of movement, emergence, abundance, and expression.

Pour does not have to depict the act of pouring. It may be expressed through flowing water, cascading light, moving clouds, falling rain, abundant gardens, streams of color, emotional expression, or any subject where energy, movement, release, or abundance are present.

Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly through their own unique perspective. Whether realistic, impressionistic, abstract, or conceptual, we welcome artwork that captures the spirit of something flowing, emerging, overflowing, or being shared.

Number of Artworks Allowed: MAA Members are invited to submit for consideration up to 2 artworks. Artists may submit work in any of the following categories:

Natural Landscapes, Maritime, and Seascapes

Cityscapes, Townscapes, Urbanscapes

Still Life

Abstract Art

Portraiture - People and Animals

Eligible Media: 2D works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, encaustic, hand-pulled prints, drawing/ink mediums, textile, digital painting (read Digital Painting Requirements) and photography. 3D works are not included in this show.

Cost: There is no cost to submit your work to for consideration. If your artwork is selected by the curators, a fee of $15 will be invoiced to those selected to be in this show. You may also. pay at art drop off.

Process: Submitted artwork will be selected by the vineyard owners. Approximately 18 - 25 selected works will be exhibited for a three month period. All artwork must be for sale. Windridge will notify artists when work is sold. Windridge will provide payment to the artist, less a 20% commission.

Framing and Wiring Requirements ( MAA Framing & Wiring Requirements): All selected works must be framed, gallery wrapped or professionally finished, securely wired with hanging wire (no loops, sawtooth hangers). If submitting an unframed canvas, edge must be painted or finished to a professional level. No wet canvases will be accepted.

All accepted work must be exhibition-ready and delivered to Windridge Vineyard Tasting Room on Monday,September 14, 10am-noon.

Replacement of Sold Artwork: Artists whose work is sold during the show period may contact the show manager or VP Shows to replace the sold work. Artists are not to contact the staff at Windridge Vineyard to replace artwork.

MAA's tradition is to hold a critique session by one of our talented, local, professional artists. This year we are excited to welcome local artist Lenny Campello, to join us for a 90-minute in-person critique session. During this 90 minute session, Lenny Campello will review 12 members’ work and provide feedback.

Members who would like to watch and listen to Lenny's comments, but do not want their work critiqued, please register accordingly.

We have 12 spots for this session.

About Lenny Campello: Florencio Lennox Campello was once described by The Washington City Paper as “… one of the most interesting people of Washington, DC”and subsequently, while participating in the Art Basel Miami Beach week of art fairs, Brickell Magazine, in describing the people, fairs and art taking place that week in the Greater Miami area noted that he was “one of the most intriguing minds in the city.”

Campello is not only an artist – he studied art at The University of Washington School of Art in Seattle, from which he graduated in 1981 – but also a highly respected curator, a widely published art critic, an author, and one of the Internet’s Top 15 art bloggers.

Please join us for a morning of FALL PLEIN AIR PAINTING on Saturday, October 10, from 9am -12pm at the vast historic Montgomery Agricultural Farm in Derwood, Maryland.

Grant Wood painted in rural Iowa in the 1930's during the Great Depression when many Americans felt oppressed and longed for simpler times. We can see what a farm looked like in the 1930's in Montgomery County here at the Agricultural History Farm Park which centers on the Magruder-Bussard farmstead, a well-preserved example of an early 20th-century farm. Location: 18400 Muncaster Road, Derwood, MD 20855

This scenic 455-acre park features rolling hills, open fields, an apple orchard, a variety of farm animals, and test gardens for the Dahlia Society. There are barns to paint, a historic farm house and other structures in this rural landscape. The main barn here was built in 1898 by the Bussard family and features distinctive elements such as square louvered windows, German siding, a stone foundation, and a half open fore-bay, which were common in the regions agricultural structures at the time. The mission of this agricultural farm is to preserve and interpret agricultural practices and lifestyles spanning the early 1700s through the 1960s.

Number of registrants: Up to 30 members and their guests (Members may bring 1 guest.)

What to expect: Once you have arrived, please check in with Mark in front of the farm house. He will be wearing a baseball cap. We will paint all morning and then gather around 11:45 for a quick share and see, and group photo. If you wish to bring a lunch and extend your painting experience to the afternoon, feel free. The park closes at dusk.

What to bring: Please bring your standard paints, substrate, easel, stool, medium, drop cloth, hand wipes, sun hat, bug spray. If you wish to extend your day, feel free to bring a bag lunch to picnic.

Getting there: If you'd like to try to find a ride or carpool with other participants, please post a note in our members-only Facebook group.

Parking: The entrance to the farm park is located on Muncaster Road, marked by a brown wooden sign. To reach the historic buildings, turn right onto the gravel road at the first junction. Parking is available in the grass field in front of the farmhouse, accessible through an opening in the wooden fence on the right. Please avoid parking near the historic buildings, as it can disrupt the visitor experience.

Photos: A photo permit is not required if photos are personal mementos of your attendance.

Michael Messner is more than happy to do the demonstration for MAA members. Before his retirement as a mathematical statistician, Mike was honored to receive the American Statistical Association’s Roger Herriot Award for Innovation in Federal Statistics. Now, he brings mathematics, statistics and innovation to his printing, painting and sculpture. In this workshop, Mike will step through his process for creating striped color portraits. The process involves masking paper, a laser engraver, careful painting by hand, and - of course - math.

Cost: The registration fee is $10 per person.

Theme: Afterglow

Afterglow explores what remains after a moment of intensity—how light, color, and atmosphere continue to shift and resonate.

Artists are encouraged to move beyond literal interpretations and consider how energy is carried through a work—whether through color, contrast, surface, or composition. This may be expressed through landscape, interior, figure, or abstract approaches.

Successful work will demonstrate a clear and intentional use of light and color to create a sense of presence that extends beyond the immediate moment.

Juried Art Selection
Afterglow is a juried exhibition featuring approximately 65 2D works and up to 10 sculpture works of art selected by Jordan Bruns. All members are warmly encouraged to submit artwork for consideration. In making selections for the exhibition, the juror will consider the overall strength of the artwork, the quality of presentation, and how thoughtfully the work connects to the theme Afterglow. We encourage artists to submit work that reflects both their artistic vision and their personal interpretation of the theme. Juried selections will be made by October 9.

Judged Awards Process
In addition to serving as juror, Jordan Bruns will also judge the selected works for recognition awards. Award consideration begins with the submitted artwork images, which Jordan uses for an initial review before making final award decisions after viewing the artwork in the gallery. Works will be evaluated for artistic impact, originality, composition, technical skill, presentation, and the effectiveness with which the artwork expresses the spirit and interpretation of the theme Afterglow. Award determinations will be made between October 20 - November 3.

Importance of Artwork Images

Submitted artwork images play an important role in both the jurying and awards review process. Artists are strongly encouraged to provide high-resolution photographs with accurate color representation, proper lighting, and clear detail. Images should present the artwork as professionally and accurately as possible, as initial jury and award considerations are made from the submitted digital images before final review in the gallery.

Eligible Media:

2D artwork: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, encaustic, drawing/ink mediums, hand-pulled prints, fused glass, textile-fiber arts, digital painting (read Digital Painting Requirements), and photography. All 2D artwork must meet MAA framing requirements and wiring standards. See framing guidance FRAMING GUIDANCE.

3D artwork: Fused glass, mosaic, clay, wood and/or metal. Sculpture work will be displayed on pedestals or elevated spaces. (up to 10 total pieces).

Number of Works and Sizes: Allowed: MAA members are invited to submit:

Two Dimensional Artwork: 1 artwork entry per member -- and an optional 2 artwork may be registered (seen note below on second work). We will accept 8 works that are up to 48" (that could be a 24x48" or a 48x48") and 55 smaller works of various sizes not to exceed 32" on any side. The gallery will accommodate approximately 63 wall artworks in total.
Three Dimensional Artwork: 1 artwork in 3D sculpture category per member. A total of ten 3D sculptures will be accepted in this show. 3D work will be displayed on pedestals or larger sculpture can be shown as a floor piece.
Optional 2nd artwork in either 2D or 3D: Members may register a second work for consideration by the show judge.

Show Fee: There is not cost to registration for your artwork to be considered for this show. There will be $20 show fee for accepted artwork (nonrefundable).

Dripping Dogwoods by Cherie Jordan

Cherie Jordan's "Dripping Dogwoods" is POUR without a single drop being poured — just a garden giving over to it.

See it at Windridge Vineyard this fall. And come meet Cherie and the other 20 artists as each one finds their own way to pour — through light, color, rain, or bloom — join us for an evening of wine, art, and something quietly overflowing.

What to Expect: This will be a fun evening of good conversation and music and time to meet other MAA artists. All MAA members are welcome. The evening will be perfect so join us.

The Artists' Table is inside the Tasting Room right in near the musicians. Look for the "Artists Table" sign. MAA will provide light snacks and offer each exhibiting artist a complimentary glass of wine. Seating is available for 16–18 people.

The Montgomery Art Association is pleased to invite members and guests to a special late-autumn field trip to one of the nation’s premier destinations for contemporary art, architecture, and landscape design.

Nestled within a beautifully curated natural setting in Potomac, Maryland, Glenstone offers a unique museum experience where world-class contemporary art is thoughtfully integrated with architecture, sculpture, water features, and expansive landscapes. The quieter atmosphere of late November provides an ideal setting for reflection, artistic inspiration, and meaningful engagement with both art and nature.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore Glenstone’s renowned galleries, the award-winning Pavilions, outdoor sculpture installations, and contemplative landscapes while experiencing one of the most distinctive cultural institutions in the United States.

Meeting Location

Please meet at 10:00 AM in front of the Glenstone Arrival Hall (Main Visitor Entrance). We will gather outside the main entrance before entering the museum together.

Admission

Admission is free; advance registration and museum reservations are required and MAA has already secured tickets for everyone who registers.

Optional Lunch Gathering

Following the museum visit, participants are welcome to join fellow members for lunch at the Glenstone Café, which offers a seasonal menu featuring locally sourced ingredients in an elegant and relaxed setting overlooking the museum grounds.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for indoor and outdoor exploration.
Parking is free and the parking lot opens at 9:45 AM.
Carpooling is encouraged when possible.
Our museum tickets are for a specific time -10:00 AM. Please try to be on time.

This field trip is especially recommended for artists, photographers, designers, architects, writers, and anyone interested in contemporary art, landscape aesthetics, creative practice, and cultural enrichment.
