      Max participants: 8 persons

      Event:   April 21st

      -Break down: 4-4:30 pm

The Day of the Book Festival is back!

The Kensington Day of the Book Festival is a family friendly street festival, held rain or shine, spanning three blocks of Howard Avenue in the heart of historic Kensington. Come meet authors, poets, literary and community organizations. Live music on a few stages, special guest speakers, poetry readings, cookbook demos, children’s program, and much more.

This fun annual event celebrates our community and the creativity of our artists! MAA is sponsoring a tent at the festival, with space for up to 8 member artists to display and sell prints, flat originals, greeting cards and a few small artworks. Artists must be present to process sales and volunteer or team up with a fellow artist.

Where: The festival will be along Howard Avenue in Old Kensington, between Armory and Montgomery Avenue.

Cost to participate: Free; MAA membership is required.

What you may sell: Member artists may bring one print bin, one card rack, and 2 or 3 small works (no larger than 14” in any dimension) with supporting easels. All items must be in plastic sleeves/bags with labels that shows price, artist name, and contact info. A book or literary subject is not required.  Please note, it can get windy and paintings on easels tend to blow over.

Volunteering/staffing: As a member event, all participants must bring their own items at drop off (10-10:30am) and be present to collect them promptly at 4:00pm take down. Please keep in mind that it is also required that participants sign up to volunteer in 2.5-hour shifts during the festival day from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm to providing tent oversight and help with set up or take down. Once we know all the participating artists, we will connect you with one another and the shifts they sign up for in case you wish to pair up, to process sales of artwork.

Sales: Participants will process their own sales and receive 100% of sales; MAA will NOT take a commission. We recommend you have electronic methods for accepting payments via credit card, PayPal/Venmo, as well as cash sales. As mentioned above, you MUST be present at the booth to process your sales (or buddy up with another artist to help each other).

Disclaimer: Reasonable care and security will be provided by the MAA volunteer artists. Neither MAA nor the Kensington Day of the Book Festival organization will be held responsible for loss or damage to artwork after dropping off, during the festival, or during pick up. Artists are advised to have their own insurance.

MAA and AMP by Strathmore are teaming up once again to host sketch nights at the North Bethesda live music club.

Chat with fellow MAA artists over drinks and appetizers before we all make art together during a performance by The Alaya Project, a California trio that blends the classic music style of Southern India—”Carnatic style,” as it’s known—with contemporary jazz and funk. We reserved several tables just for MAA members and their guests.

About the performance: The Alaya Project explores new textures and perspectives built over two decades of friendship and musical immersion. The group combines the grooves of Indian percussionist and drummer Rohan Krishnamurthy with the soulful Ragas and melodies of Prasant Radhakrishnan on saxophone and the harmonic bedrock of Colin Hogan. Number of spots: 24

Tickets: AMP by Strathmore is generously offering reduced-priced, $21 tickets (25% off the regular rate) for MAA members and their guests only. Sign up on this page.

What to expect: We’ll host social time from 7:15-8 pm and provide complimentary, shared appetizers at our tables. The venue has a full bar where you can purchase cocktails, beer, wine, soda, etc. The show itself starts at 8 pm and ends by 9:30-10 pm. The room has low lighting, but our tables will be lit with small lights so that you can see your work. You're welcome to sketch or just enjoy the show. See photos from past MAA Sketch Nights.

What to bring: Sketching materials (such as small sketchbooks, pencils/pens, travel-sized watercolor kit). Keep your materials simple—there isn't a lot of space to spread out.

MAA has arranged for a private guided tour of the exhibition “Bonnard's Worlds” at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, on Saturday, May 18 at 11:30 am.

Bonnard's Worlds, the first major retrospective of Pierre Bonnard's work at The Phillips Collection in 20 years, explores the sensory spheres of experience that fueled the French artist's creative practice.  Bonnard's immediate surroundings were the lifeblood of his work, and this exhibition is guided by those personal spaces that found expression in this art through his recording of remembered sensations.  Governed neither by chronology nor geograph, but by measures of intimacy, the exhibition transports the visitor from the larger realms in which Bonnard lived -- the landscapes of Paris, Normandy, and the South of France -- to the most intimate interior spaces of his dwellings and his thoughts.  Bonnard's Worlds reunites some of Bonnard's most celebrated works from museums across Europe and the United States, as well as many less-exhibited works drawn from private collections

      DETAILS

Cost: $28 per person if you are not a Phillips Collection member (includes required museum admission) or $8 per person if you are a Phillips Collection member (membership confirmed by museum staff upon arrival).

Schedule:  The tour will last approximately one (1) hour, from 11:30 am ET to 12:30 pm ET.

Where to meet: At the museum main entrance about 15-20 minutes before your tour is to begin. See parking and visitor info

Group size: There will be two concurrent tour groups; each group is limited to 20 participants. MAA members may bring 1 guest. Indicate on the registration form if you’d like to be contacted if we’re under-enrolled and you’d like to sign up additional guests.

      Cancellation policy:
Cancellations are accepted via email at maaprograms23@gmail.com. Refunds will only be provided if we are able to fill your spot with someone on the waiting list and only until April 30. From May 1-onward, no refunds.
